To be more specific, we’ll look at the top controllers based on different requirements (live performance, home studio, etc.). Software monitoring is needed when you are recording audio into Logic and you want to hear that signal mixed in with your track. Case in point: you have one of those new Apogee mics with a USB output. That plugs into your computer and the signal gets routed internally to Logic. To hear your track you're listening via headphones. Create a new, empty project. We want it to have one audio track. Make sure you are using default settings. This means that Software Monitoring is on (in Preferences Audio Devices Core Audio). Also, in Logic's main menu, look at Options Audio Auto Input Monitoring, and make sure that this menu item is checked. Enabling Software Monitoring for Recording. The Software Monitoring function allows you to monitor incoming audio through any effect plug-ins that are inserted into an armed audio channel strip. Audio inputs must be assigned on the record-enabled channel strips for software monitoring to function.
Hmm, what does the manual say? (rethoric, for here it is:)

Anyhoo, when you use (auto~) input monitoring, you monitor the signal that has +gone through Logic.+ If you already use direct monitoring (from the interface), it should not make a difference. If you monitor direct and through Logic (when both are routed to an outboard mixer), you'll get a doubling/delay effect, as Logic will add a bit of latency to the signal, even if the input chain is pluginless.

Using the Input Monitoring Buttons
You can use the Input Monitoring buttons to monitor audio tracks that are not armed.
Simply enable the Input Monitoring button on an audio track (or channel strip in the
Arrange or Mixer windows). This works when Logic Pro is stopped or playing.
